In Roquetas de Mar we have two dominating winds, the Eastern Levante and the Western Poniente.
The Poniente blows more frequently, and stronger, especially in spring. Usually it is quite weak in the morning, then picks up around noon, reaching in the afternoon levels of Force 4 to 5. This is an ideal wind for beginners, as it makes no waves. You can not imagine a better wind to start learning surf, to sail with harness, for the first gliding and waterstarts.
It is also the best wind to learn to sail a catamaran, as there is almost no swell at all.
When Poniente blows in earnest, it can become really tough, with winds of up to Force 6 to 8.
For those who enjoy waves, we take our guests to Almerimar, a beach some 15 Km (20 minutes drive) South of Roquetas, where you can find big Poniente rollers, with wonderful conditions for sailing with waves.
The Levante is generally not so strong, but when it blows it is ideal for the seasoned surfer who enjoys big waves and a constant, uniform wind.
